PubhD: Training Computers, Refraction Modelling, Bacteria Fights

Doors open at 7pm. Kickoff at 7.30 === This special event comes to you in association with our friends from PubhD Glasgow The format is nice and simple; 1: Three researchers will each have 10 minutes to talk about their subject area to an interested audience in a pub. 2: There will be up to 20 minutes of (friendly!) Q&A per speaker. 3: Each speaker gets at least one pint (or other drink of their choice). A whiteboard/flip chart and coloured pens will be provided. === Elina Koristashevskaya: Measuring meaning: training a computer to understand texts. Elina is a doctoral researcher at the University of Glasgow, reading English Language. Her background is in English Literature, Language, and Linguistics. Her PhD research involves computer-assisted analysis of texts, and she is currently working on measuring the collocation of semantic domains in literary texts. She is also the co-founder of Experimental Methods in the Humanities at Glasgow (XPMGla), an interdisciplinary postgraduate research group. --- Catriona Thomson: Using bacteria to fight bacteria: Saving the world one potato at a time! Catriona has always loved science but started out her scientific exploits as a neuroscientist before accidentally falling into the world of microbiology. She's particularly interested in the discovery of new antibiotics and all things bacteria. In her spare time she mostly enjoys going to the pub, climbing hills and hanging out with her cats' --- Ainsley Miller: Modelling refraction in Large Volume Light-Based Metrology Ainsley is in her second year of her PhD at Strathclyde where she is studying EEE and Maths, with her background being in Maths, Stats and Economics. She will be talking about metrology, but what actually is it? It’s the science of measurement. What’s the big deal? So - robots are being using more in manufacturing and they are used to measure and position components, but they are inaccurate. Why? They use light based systems like lasers and photogrammetry equipment to take the measurements. These systems use light to take measurement and light rays bend in uncontrolled temperature regions like in industry which is a huge problem. How will you fix it ? Some cool maths…" === This is event is free to attend, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn't end up in anyone's pocket - it is used to fund our overhead costs, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. === Accessibility: There is a separate entry/exit to/from the function room in Dram which can be opened if required. Please contact us to make arrangements === Note, create events in both in our Facebook Community and our official Facebook page. This is because some members of the Group either haven't 'Liked' our official Page, and vice versa ... so don't be worried if you think you're seeing double ===
